Chef Alejandra Espinoza's Cotoa Earns Michelin Recognition, Puts Ecuadorian Cuisine on Miami's Map

North Miami, Miami · February 1, 2026

A story about Cotoa

In a city known for Cuban, Colombian, and Venezuelan flavors, Ecuadorian chef Alejandra Espinoza is carving out space for her homeland's cuisine—and the Michelin Guide has taken notice.

Cotoa, Espinoza's intimate 24-seat restaurant in North Miami, has earned a Michelin recommendation, cementing its place among Miami's most exciting dining destinations.

"Cotoa embodies everything Miami's culinary scene needs more of right now," said Virginia Gil, USA Editor at TimeOut Miami. "An ambitious chef preparing food that tastes like home, an intimate dining room with easygoing style, and hospitality that's warm and unrushed."

The all-day menu is light and fun, brief but full of complex flavors and fresh takes on familiar-to-Miami ingredients. The Pan de Yuca—pillowy cheese bread rolls with the perfect amount of bite, served with mamey chutney—is inspired by the start of every meal in Ecuador.

"Every dish tells a story," Espinoza explained. "The Mahi Mahi Manicero is served in an aromatic coconut-ginger base that reminds me of coastal Ecuador. El Pincho, our smoky chimichurri hanger steak, comes with crunchy papa chaucha and Jerusalem artichoke chips."

What sets Cotoa apart is the combination of quality, portion size, and price that actually makes sense. A generous lunch for two—including ceviche, starter, and steak entrée—runs about $100, a genuine value for the quality and experience.

For those seeking something different, Espinoza recommends the Cacao Lime Tea, "Pepa Dorada"—a refreshing iced tea made with cacao husks that provides the perfect midday pick-me-up.

Cotoa is located at 12475 NE 6th Ct in North Miami. Reservations are highly recommended given the restaurant's limited seating and growing reputation.
