Brisbane Riverwalk Reopens: CBD's Beloved Waterfront Path Returns After Three-Year Closure

Brisbane CBD, Brisbane · February 1, 2025

A story about Brisbane City Council / Dexus

After three long years, Brisbane's cherished Riverwalk is set to reopen, reuniting one of the city's most beloved pedestrian and cycling routes. The 256-metre upgraded section will once again link the waterfront path from Charlotte Street to Alice Street, creating a continuous route from the iconic Story Bridge all the way to the City Botanic Gardens.

The section had been fenced off since 2023 due to construction work on the multibillion-dollar Waterfront Brisbane development. Developer Dexus has confirmed an official reopening event is planned with Brisbane City Council for early February 2026.

The wait has been worth it. The passage has been completely rebuilt with new concrete paths and steel banisters, creating a fresh yet familiar feel for the thousands of commuters, joggers, and leisure walkers who use the route daily. A striking new mural featuring sharks and a young girl now adorns the section facing the Kangaroo Point Bridge, adding an artistic touch to the revitalised space.

The reopening comes at a particularly opportune time, as the Riverwalk now connects directly to the city-side entrance of the new Kangaroo Point Bridge, transforming the area into an increasingly vibrant hub for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

The broader Waterfront Brisbane development will eventually comprise two new office towers, shops, restaurants, and significant public space. With an estimated construction cost of $2.5 billion, the project is expected to complete in late 2028.

For the many Brisbanites who have been forced to take detours around the closure, the Riverwalk's return represents more than just convenience—it's a restoration of one of the city's most treasured outdoor experiences. The continuous connection from Story Bridge to the Botanic Gardens once again offers residents and visitors alike one of Australia's finest urban waterfront walks.
