Bar Monte Expands: Gold Coast Favourite Brings World-Class Italian Dining to Newstead

Newstead, Brisbane · February 1, 2025

A story about Bar Monte

Gold Coast diners have long treasured Bar Monte in Miami as a go-to for exceptional Italian fare. Now, Brisbane residents can celebrate as this beloved establishment has opened its doors in Newstead, bringing with it punchy Italian flavours and a wine list curated by one of the world's finest sommeliers.

The new 100-seat venue is the vision of James Sutherland, Kim Stephen of Light Years fame, and Lorenzo Toscani of Byron Bay's Pixie. Together, they've created a space that offers a more elevated experience tailored to Brisbane's evolving dining landscape—warm and inviting like its Gold Coast sibling, but with added sophistication for the big smoke.

Designed by Studio Plenty, the interior is a refined interpretation of a neighbourhood trattoria. Spotted gum timber, glossy ceramic tiles, sculptural wool pendants, and curved banquettes create a setting that is both welcoming and visually striking.

The menu reimagines Italian classics with contemporary flair. Highlights include Ortiz anchovy toast with smoked tomato butter, mortadella bun with pickled green chilli and limoncello aioli, and paccheri alla vodka with nduja and stracciatella. The dry-aged bistecca with porcini rub and marrow butter has quickly become a crowd favourite.

Perhaps the most impressive credential belongs to sommelier Andrea Martinisi, who earned a top-ten placing in the Association of Sommeliers International's World Best Sommelier Competition. His carefully curated wine list of nearly 100 bottles spans Italy, France, and Australia. The cocktail menu is equally inventive, featuring playful creations like the Caprese Martini and a herbaceous celery margarita dubbed the Celerita.

Bar Monte Newstead represents a significant addition to Brisbane's thriving culinary scene, proving that world-class Italian dining is now firmly established in the River City.
