What started as a single folding table in Edinburgh Gardens has grown into a citywide movement. Every Sunday morning, residents of Fitzroy set up the "Share Table" — a communal spread of home-cooked dishes, fresh produce, and pantry staples that anyone can contribute to or take from, no questions asked.
Organizer Priya Nair, a social worker who has lived in Fitzroy for 12 years, launched the initiative last September after noticing that rising grocery costs were affecting even middle-income families in the neighbourhood. "I didn't want it to feel like charity," Nair explained. "The idea is that everyone has something to share and everyone has something they need. It's a table, not a queue."
The concept has resonated deeply. On a recent Sunday, over 80 residents gathered around three long tables laden with everything from Sri Lankan curry to sourdough loaves to boxes of seasonal fruit from backyard trees. Local cafes including Wide Open Road and Alimentari have begun donating surplus pastries and coffee, while community gardens contribute fresh vegetables.
The movement has now spread to Brunswick, Northcote, and Collingwood, with organizers in each neighbourhood adapting the model to their community. The City of Yarra recently recognized the Share Table with a Community Spirit Award and provided a small grant for supplies and weather shelters.
"The most beautiful thing is watching strangers become friends over food," Nair said. "People who've lived on the same street for years and never spoken are now cooking for each other." A group of university students from RMIT has also joined, documenting the movement for a sociology research project on urban community resilience.
The Fitzroy Share Table meets every Sunday from 9 AM to noon at Edinburgh Gardens near the rotunda. Follow @fitzroysharetable on Instagram to get involved or start a table in your neighbourhood.
