After much anticipation and eight months of construction, Mexico City's iconic El Moro Churreria has officially opened its Echo Park location, bringing nearly a century of churro-making tradition to Los Angeles.
The blue-and-white logo of the legendary churrería now beams brightly over Sunset Boulevard at 1524 W. Sunset Boulevard, in the transformed former Patra Burgers space. This marks the second Southern California location for the nearly 100-year-old institution, following its successful 2023 debut at Costa Mesa's Mercado González.
"After that first step in Mercado Gonzalez, we were confident that our experience could be shared by a lot of people in Echo Park as well," said Santiago Iriarte, co-owner and grandson of El Moro's founder, explaining the expansion.
The new 1,500-square-foot restaurant, designed by Nacho Cadena of Cadena Concept Design, features a stunning mural by Los Angeles-based artist Ozzie Juarez on its exterior. Inside, the space seats 30, with an additional 40-seat patio perfect for enjoying churros under the California sun.
The menu features freshly fried, cinnamon-dusted churros available individually or in boxes, along with mini-sized versions. Guests can choose from a dipping trio including chocolate, chocolate and hazelnut, cajeta, condensed milk, or seasonal flavors. The signature consuelo—a spiraled churro ice cream sandwich—promises to become an instant LA favorite.
Beyond churros, El Moro offers al pastor and asada tortas, café de olla, Mexican iced lattes in flavors like horchata and churro, and their famous hot chocolate made with cacao imported from Mexico in Oaxaqueno, French, or Mexicano styles.
Hours are Sunday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday—perfect for late-night churro cravings.
