A story about Chicago Artists Coalition

For forty-five years, the Chicago Artists Coalition has been doing something deceptively simple and profoundly important: making it possible for artists and curators to build real, sustainable careers without leaving the city they love. Based in a gallery and studio space at 1431 West Hubbard Street in Chicago's West Town neighbourhood, CAC has become one of the most vital institutions in the city's thriving creative ecosystem.

A Mission Built on Practicality

CAC's approach to supporting artists goes far beyond hanging work on walls. The organization offers residency programs, exhibitions, professional development, and a comprehensive suite of resources designed to help Chicago's creative community not just survive, but thrive. It's an acknowledgment that making art is only half the battle — building a career around it requires infrastructure, mentorship, and community.

"I definitely began to see my career as something much bigger and broader than I had before," shared artist Amina Ross, reflecting on her time as a BOLT resident. It's a sentiment echoed by dozens of artists who have passed through CAC's programs over the decades.

Residencies That Launch Careers

CAC's flagship residency programs — BOLT and HATCH — have become launchpads for some of Chicago's most exciting emerging talent. BOLT provides artists with studio space, mentorship, professional development workshops, and exhibition opportunities, including the chance to present work at major events like EXPO CHICAGO.

"During my time at CAC, I went from a graduate student with a few group shows on my resume to an artist with five solo shows, gallery representation, and a Special Project seen by 30,000 people at EXPO CHICAGO," recalled artist Erik Peterson, a former HATCH and BOLT resident. "All a direct result of my time at Chicago Artists Coalition."

HATCH Projects, CAC's curatorial residency, offers emerging curators the same level of support — building professional networks, challenging assumptions, and expanding their capacity to create thoughtful, exciting exhibitions. "HATCH challenged what I already knew and expanded my capacity to generate thoughtful ideas and exciting exhibitions," said curator Le Keisha Leek.

Chicago Artists Resource

Beyond its residency programs, CAC maintains the Chicago Artists Resource — a comprehensive online platform where artists can find calls for submissions, job opportunities, and available studio space. For anyone trying to navigate the practical realities of an arts career in Chicago, CAR has been an indispensable tool for years.

The platform reflects CAC's understanding that the creative economy depends on infrastructure as much as inspiration. By connecting artists with opportunities and resources in one accessible place, CAR helps maintain the ecosystem that makes Chicago one of America's great arts cities.

A Gallery Open to All

CAC's gallery space hosts rotating exhibitions that showcase the work of current and former residents alongside other Chicago-based artists and curators. The gallery is open Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., with additional visits available by appointment.

After forty-five years, the Chicago Artists Coalition remains exactly what its name promises: a coalition of people who believe that artists deserve the support, resources, and community they need to do their best work — right here in Chicago.
