First Mates, Last Laugh Wins Best New Establishment at 2025 Lewisham Awards

Auckland Central, Auckland · February 1, 2025

A story about Judith Tabron

When Auckland's hospitality industry gathered at the Viaduct Events Centre for the 22nd annual Lewisham Awards, one name was on everyone's lips: First Mates, Last Laugh. The venue, created by industry stalwart Judith Tabron, took home the coveted Best New Establishment award—a fitting recognition for one of Auckland's most innovative new openings.

Established in 2002, the Lewisham Awards celebrate excellence in Auckland's hospitality community, recognising the individuals and establishments that make the city's food and drink scene world-class. The 2025 ceremony highlighted pies, pasta, and pescatarian menus among the year's standout trends.

Judith Tabron's win represents decades of hospitality experience culminating in her most personal project yet. First Mates, Last Laugh embodies her philosophy that dining should be both memorable and meaningful—a place where guests feel like friends and every meal tells a story.

The evening also celebrated other luminaries of Auckland's hospitality scene. Nicola Richards received the prestigious Hospitality Hero award, recognising her outstanding contribution to the industry and her commitment to mentoring the next generation of hospitality professionals.

Apero's Leslie Hottiaux was named Best Chef, cementing her restaurant's reputation as one of Auckland's finest dining destinations. Meanwhile, Panacea received recognition for Best Cocktail Experience and a sustainability award—with the bar's bartender Theo Tjandra also taking home Best Bartender.

The Lewisham Awards serve as an annual reminder of the talent, creativity, and resilience that defines Auckland's hospitality industry. In a year marked by economic challenges, these winners represent the best of what happens when passion meets skill—and when Aucklanders support their local establishments.
